David Ferguson: Music
Summertime
(David Ferguson & Robert Tepper)
Gershwin, Gershwin, Heyward
I think this is one of the most exquisite melodies ever written. But because so many people have recorded it, performers are faced with a dilemma, namely, how to play it and not sound like everyone else. I played the opening in a sort of quasi-fingerstyle fashion, using a pick and my fingers instead of just a pick or just my fingers. After the opening verse I wanted to make it “jump” a little and I think we did that okay. I’m using the archtop and the nylon string and Robert, as with every track, plays his Gibson.
